What Is the Process for Getting New Countertops?

Planning a kitchen or bathroom update? Installing new countertops is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make. Whether you’re choosing quartz, granite, marble, or another surface, the process typically follows a clear step-by-step path.

Here’s what to expect when getting new countertops—from your first consultation to final installation.

Step-by-Step Countertop Installation Process

1. Initial Consultation & Design Planning

You’ll start by meeting with a countertop specialist to discuss:

  • Your design goals and vision

  • Preferred material (e.g., quartz, granite, quartzite)

  • Color preferences, edge styles, and backsplash options

  • Budget and timeline

Tip: Bring cabinet samples, flooring photos, or inspiration images to help guide your selection.

2. Material Selection

Next, you’ll visit a showroom or slab yard to choose your countertop material and color. You can:

  • View full slabs in person

  • Compare edge profiles and finishes

  • Ask questions about durability and maintenance

Once you select your slab, it’s reserved for your project.

3. In-Home Measurement & Templating

A technician will visit your home to take precise measurements of your countertop area. This includes:

  • Dimensions of all surfaces

  • Sink and appliance placement

  • Backsplash height and cutouts

A template is then created—either physical or digital—to ensure a perfect fit.

4. Fabrication

Using the final template, your slab is custom-cut and finished at a fabrication shop. This process includes:

  • Cutting the slab to exact specifications

  • Polishing edges and applying any decorative profiles

  • Cutting sink and faucet holes

Fabrication typically takes 5–10 business days, depending on material and complexity.

5. Countertop Installation

On installation day, the team will:

Most installations are completed in 1 day, though larger or more complex layouts may take longer.

6. Final Inspection & Care Tips

After installation, the crew will:

  • Perform a final walkthrough with you

  • Provide care and maintenance guidelines

  • Ensure you’re fully satisfied with the results

What You Should Prepare

  • Clear access to the installation area

  • Disconnect plumbing or schedule a plumber if needed

  • Confirm sink, faucet, and appliance selections ahead of time
